Marriage License

For an official and legal marriage, you must obtain a State of Hawaii marriage license application prior to the ceremony. The application must be finalized in person by an agent of the Department of Health, Marriage License Division.

  1. We recommend that you complete the application and pay for it online about 30 days before and at least one week before your ceremony, as this will expedite the process when you go in to meet an agent who will finalize and issue the marriage license application.
  2. After you have completed the application online and paid the registration fee, about $65, you will be able to schedule an appointment online to meet in person with a marriage license agent in person.
  3. Although you are asked on the application, you do not need to fill in the date and location of your wedding or the officiant’s name. This can be entered when your officiant files your marriage.
  4. You MUST meet with an agent IN PERSON to obtain the finalized marriage license BEFORE the ceremony. If you have any difficulty scheduling an appointment, we suggest that you go directly to their office at 1250 Punchbowl St., the first weekday morning that you are here between 8 am and 3 pm, excluding Holidays. The finalized marriage license application is good for 30 days from the date it is issued by the agent.
  5. You will give your officiant the application at the ceremony, who will use the application to file your marriage online. You will then be able to obtain your temporary marriage license in 1-3 business days. Your permanent marriage license will be mailed directly to you by the Department of Health in approximately one month.
